Wonderful activity, yet great tranquility – the western shoreline of Lough Derg is a magical destination.

Lough Derg West is a holidaymaker’s delight, whether you are seeking out great activity or in search of a haven of peace and tranquility.

This is a magical destination, which stretches from idyllic Killaloe on the southern tip of majestic Lough Derg through the wonderful towns and villages of East Clare right up to the South-East corner of County Galway – all situated within easy reach of the lake shoreline.

It’s an area of great scenic beauty. To the east lies the great lake, the great expanse of uncluttered waterway which leads to some dramatic landscape scenes and great views from the lakeshore. On the western side, you have the dramatic mountain ranges of Slieve Bernagh in East Clare and Slieve Aughty in South Galway that provide an imposing backdrop.

The scenic beauty and easy-going lifestyle of the area make an ideal combination for those who seek a bit of solitude and an opportunity to unwind in a most pleasant environment.

But there’s a wealth of great activity pursuits to choose from too, for those who want a more energetic holiday. A vast range of water sports is possible all along the lake shoreline and on East Clare’s wonderful lakes and rivers.

This part of Lough Derg and the East Clare Lakelands are both noted as being great angling territories. This is also first-class terrain for other outdoor activities, ranging from equestrian pursuits and golfing to walking and cycling.

The many towns and villages scattered through the area offer a great holiday base. Steeped in history and traditional music and culture, they provide a most welcoming environment with good amenities.

There’s great history and heritage in this part of the lake region. A rich tapestry of historic sites and folklore is everywhere. Attractions include the monastic Holy Island on the lake as well as East Clare Heritage Centre in Tuamgraney, the Aistear Park exploring Irish spirituality over 9,000 years at Mountshannon, and the Brian Boru Heritage Centre in Killaloe.
