Welcome to the southern part of Lough Derg. I'm Dergie and i'm here to help you have a super holiday on Lough Derg, in Ireland's Shannon Region. In this section, I have listed visitor information for the southern part of Lough Derg together with ideas, suggestions and recommendations. Keep an eye out for them.
Situated on the fringe of Limerick City (off the N7 Limerick to Dublin route), Annacotty in Co. Limerick is a convenient base close to the city and nearby River Shannon.
The Mulcair River, one of the Shannon’s main tributaries, flows through the area on its way to join the mighty waterway and is a highly popular angling stretch.
The Mulcair system is particularly noted as a salmon and brown trout fishing district. Together with its main off-shoot, the Newport River, the Mulcair provides over 40km (25ml) of good fishing waters, which account for over 2,500 salmon annually.
There is first class grilse fishing from mid-June through to September, when water levels permit. It is popular both as a fly and spinning river, and fishing is from the banks or by wading.
Watch out for a spectacular waterfall at Annacotty, which is visible from the Dublin – Limerick road. Another landmark worth noting is the mediaeval ruin of 12th century Clonkeen church, with its Romanesque doorway, which is on the road from Annacotty to Cappamore. Nearby is the University of Limerick and there are many fine restaurants and hotels in the general area and on the road to Limerick City, situated two miles away.
When based here, you are very close to all the amenities of Limerick City, the Shannon Region capital, and within easy reach of the River Shannon, with all its watersports opportunities.
