What a wonderful name, Shannon Harbour, The Harbour of the Shannon! It is the main link between the Grand Canal which flows all the way into Dublin and the River Shannon. A new mooring jetty has been constructed at the junction where you can tie up for a short while and walk into Shannon Harbour.
Once a busy commercial waterways centre where the River Shannon connected with the Grand Canal, Shannon Harbour is now a popular base for pleasure craft, especially barges. It’s also a noted angling centre.
Watch out for the 16th century Clonony Castle towerhouse east of the village.
