Welcome to the Northern Part of Lough Derg. I'm Dergie and i'm here to help you have a super holiday on Lough Derg, in Ireland's Shannon Region. In this section, I have listed visitor information for the Northern part of Lough Derg together with ideas, suggestions and recommendations. Keep an eye out for them.
Located on the River Shannon between Banagher and Portumna and bodered by Galway on one side and Offaly on the other, Meelick is the location for the main lock gate before you enter Lough Derg. The lock system is a key part of the history of the Shannon River and is an enjoyable experience. The lock keepers are very friendly and always willing to lend a hand.
A notable attraction in the East Galway area is Meelick Franciscan Friary near the banks of the Shannon, which was founded by the O’Madden family in the early 15th century. It was recently restored as a parish rather than a friary church, and is now the location for the occasional celebrity wedding.
