Welcome to the Northern Part of Lough Derg. I'm Dergie and i'm here to help you have a super holiday on Lough Derg, in Ireland's Shannon Region. In this section, I have listed visitor information for the Northern part of Lough Derg together with ideas, suggestions and recommendations. Keep an eye out for them.
A pleasant rural village just a short distance from Lough Derg, Eyrecourt was named after the Eyre family, also associated with the famous Eyre Square in Galway City. One of the Eyre family, George Eyre M.P., was the model for Charles Lever's popular novel, ‘Charles O'Malley, The Irish Dragoon’.
The 17th century Eyrecourt Castle (or Eyre Court) was the focal point in the village for many years but became a ruin in the 20th century. The house, surrounding demesne and town itself were named after Colonel John Eyre who became a landowner in the area after the Cromwellian conquests.
The demesne gates were bought and restored by the National Heritage Council in the 1990s.
Each June, the village hosts an interesting Vintage Festival which features a wide selection of early tractors, steam engines and farm machinery.
