• Terryglass, the delightful village in North Tipperary, has twice won the National Tidy Towns Competition.
• When Portumna Castle on Lough Derg’s northern shores was built in 1616 by Richard Clanricarde, governor of Galway, he spent the then enormous sum of £10,000 on the semi-fortified house.
• The famous author, Anthony Trollope, had close associations with Banagher, Co. Offaly. He lived for a time and wrote his first two novels there.
• Blackwater Bog, through which the Clonmacnose and West Offaly rail tour goes, lay beneath a glacier 12,000 years ago.
• The tallest box hedges in the world are in Birr Castle Demesne in Co. Offay, where over 1,000 different species of trees and shrubs are scientifically numbered and catalogued.
• The famous monastic settlement at Clonmacnoise, Co. Offaly was destroyed by fire at least 13 times, and each time the monks rebuilt it!
