In this section, I have listed visitor information for the Northern part of Lough Derg together with ideas, suggestions and recommendations. Keep an eye out for them.
Just imagine… a stunning landscape on the shores of Ireland’s pleasure lake and one of Europe’s foremost rivers, some of the country’s most attractive villages, great historical buildings and attractions… these are just some of the treats that await you around the northern part of Lough Derg.
Taking in parts of North Tipperary, Galway East and South-West Offaly, this is an intriguing part of Ireland which will fascinate and entertain you.
You have the fine Georgian town of Portumna on the northern tip of Lough Derg, with its fine marina, great castle and Forest Park and many other amenities. This is also a popular venue for cruiser craft and for anglers.
On the other side of the lake, the beautiful lakeside village of Terryglass is famed all over Ireland as a two-time winner of the National Tidy Towns Award. Watch out for a very popular Arts Festival held here each year.
Not far away, also in North Tipperary, is Lorrha which has a wealth of historical and monastic ruins.
There are many other character-filled towns and villages around this part of Lough Derg and the River Shannon, including the historic town of Birr in Co. Offaly with its spectacular Gardens, Castle, Great Telescope and other scientific gems.
As you explore further up the great River Shannon, you will come across the beautiful riverside town of Banagher, with its excellent marina and watersports facilities. There’s much to explore beyond Banagher too, including the popular angling and boating centre of Shannonbridge and the internationally renowned monastic site of Clonmacnoise.
Whether it’s sightseeing, watersports, captaining your own cruiser, land-based pursuits or heritage seeking that takes your fancy, Lough Derg North has something special to offer.
