Welcome to the Eastern Part of Lough Derg. I'm Dergie and i'm here to help you have a super holiday on Lough Derg, in Ireland's Shannon Region. In this section, I have listed visitor information for the Eastern part of Lough Derg together with ideas, suggestions and recommendations. Keep an eye out for them.
Wonderful lakeside scenery, dramatic mountains, interesting historical attractions and attractive villages and harbours… you are spoilt for choice in Lough Derg East.
The North Tipperary shores of the lake offer wonderful scope for exploration and pleasant relaxation, away from it all. Villages like Ballinderry, Kilgarvan, Puckaun, Dromineer and Garrykennedy evoke charm, beauty and tranquillity. Each has its own distinctive character and appeal (see Towns & Villages for a brief rundown on a number of these).
For a particularly fine view of the spectacular lake and surrounding countryside, head to a place called (rather appropriately) ‘The Lookout’ on the road between Portroe and Ballina. You will be enthralled by the magnificent views from this viewing point.
A short distance from here you will come across a site known as “The Graves of the Leinstermen”. Legend has it that this is the burial place of a Leinster King and his small army who were ambushed by the wife of Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, in the 11th Century while on their way to a wedding in Killaloe where Brian had his palace.
Idyllic lake views, attractive marinas, impressive mountain ranges such as the Arra Mountains, as well as the Shannon Region’s highest peak, Keeper Hill, the famed Silvermines and Slieve Felim in the distance… it all adds up to plenty to see and enjoy for the visitor.
It doesn’t matter whether you are exploring by car, on two wheels or on foot, you will be inspired and re-energised.
This part of Lough Derg also contains a number of interesting visitor attractions which are well worth visiting. These include:
