Great Activity

You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to activities on and off the water in this part of the Lough Derg region.

A vast selection of energetic water sports, leisurely cruising, fine angling in peaceful waters, great golf, and stimulating walks and cycle trails… these are just some of the options available.

More comprehensive details on specific activity options can be got by clicking on the Lots to Do link and then on the On the Water or In the nearby Countryside options, depending on your fancy.

The following, however, are just some of the possibilities worth considering while based in the Lough Derg East area to whet your interest:

Angling: For those based in this area, Lough Derg offers superb fishing for trout, pike, bream and roach among others. Boats can be hired at Dromineer, Ballina and other harbours within a half an hour’s drive. The Nenagh River has excellent trout fishing and is easy to access.

Water Sports: Dromineer is the nearest lakeshore resort where yachts can be hired and sailing courses are available. One of the oldest yacht clubs in the world, the Lough Derg Yacht Club, which was formed in 1836, has its clubhouse in Dromineer village. At Ballina, boats of all shapes and sizes are available for hire. You can also take a short cruise of the River Shannon from Killaloe, aboard the 50-seater passenger boat ‘Spirit of Killaloe’
Golf: Nenagh Golf Course is a fine 18-hole parkland golf course (see more details by clicking Golf and Nenagh Golf Club)

Walking: There is a riverside walk ‘Slí Ala’ or ‘the swan’s trail’ which begins at Ballyartella, 3 miles from Nenagh, and follows the Nenagh River towards Dromineer. Ballyartella has a picnic place, traces of a watermill and a woollen mill shop specialising in tweed. The more energetic who want to walk longer distances could try the Lough Derg Way or the Slieve Felim Way (more details at Walking, Lough Derg Way and Slieve Felim Way).

Cycling: A number of signposted cycling routes go through Nenagh or close to the town. The two closest are The Nenagh Cycleway and the The Lough Derg Cycleway – for further details, see Cycling and get more detailed information in Info Downloads

Adventure: Just imagine the thrill and the breathtaking experience! Freefalling through the sky at 200km (124ml) per hour and getting a ‘bird’s eye’ view of the spectacular scenery around Lough Derg – check out the facilities and specialist training on offer at Skydive Ireland based in Nenagh – see Adventure for more details.

Leisure: The Trinity Leisure Club, at the Abbey Court Hotel in Nenagh offers a swimming pool and a unique ‘techno gym’ for the very energetic (see Pamper Yourself on Wellness Break for more details).

Driving Routes: There are a number of interesting drives you can take through this area which will provide a great insight into its history and offer fine sightseeing. Check out suggested driving routes such as the Lough Derg Drive and Drive through Tipperary and get more detailed information on these in Info Download. In all, there are 11 suggested driving routes through the Shannon Region for the visitor to choose from.
