Did you Know?

• Lough Derg Yacht Club, which has its base in Dromineer, Co. Tipperary, is the third oldest yacht club in the world. It was founded in 1835.
• The famous slate quarries in the Arra Mountains at Portroe employed 800 people at their peak prior to the Great Famine of the 1840s.
• Puckaun, Co. Tipperary was one of the first villages to become home to the ‘Rent-an-Irish Cottage’ holiday scheme, with traditional half-doors and thatched roofs, in the Shannon Region in the 1970s (think it was probably early 70s?)
• The village letterbox in Garrykennedy illustrates the transition to Irish independence in 1922 … [how??? Not clear from Shannon Region website or otherwise)
