Hi, my name's Dergie and i'm here to help you have a super holiday on Lough Derg, in Ireland's Shannon Region.
If you feel like exploring the lough on two wheels, then this is the place for you!
In this section, i've set out ideas, suggestions and recommendations for cyclists.
Regards Dergie
This 132km (82ml) route takes through a landscape of excellent scenery with some spectacular lake views. You will also get a great insight into the region’s rich historical past as you pass through the many quaint and attractive towns and villages.
The full route encircles the entire lake and is mostly flat, with occasional steep climbs. Most cyclists like to start and complete their journey at the twin towns of Killaloe/Ballina but, essentially, you can pick up on the way, which is signposted in both directions, anywhere along the route.
If you take the Clare shoreline direction, you will come across pleasant centres such as Ogonnelloe, the popular yachting base of Mountshannon, a National Tidy Town winner. Just beyond Ogonnelloe, you can see Holy Island with its 10th century monastic tower.
You then head for Portumna in Co. Galway at the northern tip of the lake, with its Castle, Forest Park and marina. Then it’s a return down the eastern shores of the lake on the Tipperary side, taking in such attractive villages as Terryglass (another National Tidy Towns winner) and the marina centres of Dromineer and Garrykennedy.
