Woodford
The pleasant town of Woodford in County Galway, 14km (9ml) south-west of Portumna, enjoys a delightful setting among wooded countryside, with the Slieve Aughty Mountains providing a dramatic backdrop. The village is within easy reach of Lough Derg.
The village offers a good base for exploring the nearby lake district and countryside with its pleasant amenities, including shops and pubs, and convenient location.
The town had a strong iron mill tradition, which is reflected in the town's full Irish name of 'Gráig na Muilte Iarainn', meaning 'The Village of the Iron Mills' now shortened to 'An Gráig’
You can enjoy some beautiful walks and scenery in the surrounding area, as well as come across the ruins of a ring-fort over a thousand years old. An interesting Heritage Centre is also worth a visit.
