Hi, my name's Dergie and i'm here to help you have a super holiday on Lough Derg, in Ireland's Shannon Region. This section has a listing of all of the wonderful harbours and villages around Lough Derg.
For each village or location you will find information, ideas & recommendations. Keep an eye out for them.
The beautiful village of Shannonbridge, County Offaly offers a most attractive setting on the banks of the great River Shannon. The village has a great deal to offer the angler, boating enthusiast and general tourist, with a fine mixture of leisure amenities and historical connections.
For the angler, three great waters combine in this area to offer a wide choice – the lordly River Shannon, its tributary the River Suck, and the Grand Canal. Add in other smaller waters, such as the Brosna and Little Brosna rivers, and you have spectacular fishing territory around here.
An attractive marina in the town offers fine facilities for the boating enthusiast exploring the vast expanses of Lough Derg and the River Shannon.
There’s much to see and admire too for the visitor in this attractive riverside setting – keep an eye out for a 19th century fort on the west bank just up from the narrow 16-arch bridge, where special heavy artillery was placed in Napoleonic times.
Shannonbridge is an ideal base, too, to explore the many attractions and facilities of the area. Just south of the town, you can catch a 45-minute train tour on the Clonmacnoise & West Offaly Railway which takes you through the Blackwater section of the Bog of Allen on the narrow-gauge line which used to transport the peat. You will get a great insight into how how this rare landscape developed in the course of the past 6,000 years.
One of Ireland’s greatest monastic sites is just 6.5km (4ml) south of the town. Clonmacnoise, where St. Ciaran founded a monastery in 548, offers a remarkable insight into the ‘Island of Saints and Scholars’ and is a fascinating place to visit.
