O’Brien’s Bridge
The picturesque village of O’Brien’s Bridge nestles on the banks of the River Shannon and borders three counties, Clare, Limerick and Tipperary.
The village is linked to its ‘twin’, Montpelier in Co. Limerick on the other side of the river by a 15th century stone bridge.
The stretch of the River Shannon from O’Brien’s Bridge to Castleconnell, Co. Limerick is highly regarded as a marvellous setting for a variety of watersports. Good coarse angling is also possible locally.
Rowing along the River Shannon near O’Brien’s Bridge has been compared with Henly in England. The waterway has been used by Olympic rowers for training and by the University of Limerick’s rowers on a regular basis.
The walking enthusiast is very well served here, with three Looped Walk options available from the village. Distances vary from 5km (3ml) to 12km (7.5ml) on these routes, which are approved under Failte Ireland’s Looped Walk Initiative. Two of the walks also include part of the Lough Derg National Waymarked Way.
The start and finish points for the Looped Walks are located at the Riverside Park on the river bank, which has car parking space and is overlooked by a water fountain. You can enjoy lovely views of the river on the walks.

Visitor services in or near the village include pub, restaurants, shops, Post Office, Bed & Breakfast and self-catering accommodation.
Notable features of the area include a hydro dam which controls all water in the lower River Shannon. The local community hopes to restore a triple lock gate on the river, which is very rare. Another item earmarked for restoration is the ruin of the lock keeper’s house
Keep an eye out too for Inislosky, a 12th century church ruin located on an island setting. Local folklore suggests it may have been accessible by land at one time.
