Hi, my name's Dergie and i'm here to help you have a super holiday on Lough Derg, in Ireland's Shannon Region. This section has a listing of all of the wonderful harbours and villages around Lough Derg.
For each village or location you will find information, ideas & recommendations. Keep an eye out for them.
Against the backdrop of the Slieve Felim Mountains, this North Tipperary town offers a picturesque location not fare from Lough Derg, the River Shannon and Limerick City.
Newport has a long tradition as a market town. Watch out for some lovely examples of traditional shop fronts in the square. The Newport River, a tributary of the River Mulcair, flows through the town, enhancing the area’s tourist appeal, as does its proximity to the popular trekking area of Slieve Felim. You can also use a walking trail of the town.
The courthouse built in the 1860s is still in use and its adjacent bridewell has been renovated. It is now the location for a number of activities, such as music, art and craft classes and displays.
The Catholic Church built in 1933 has a certain Byzantine flavour externally, with features such as Romanesque arches, a half-circle apse and three fine stained glass windows. In 1997, the whole sanctuary was refurbished by Fergus Costello (whose workshop is located in Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary) in a most modern style using bog oak.
