Hi, my name's Dergie and i'm here to help you have a super holiday on Lough Derg, in Ireland's Shannon Region. This section has a listing of all of the wonderful harbours and villages around Lough Derg.
For each village or location you will find information, ideas & recommendations. Keep an eye out for them.
This picturesque village in the scenic Slieve Felim Mountains area was built by the landlord Barrington family. It is a very convenient tourist base, being close to Limerick City and the many attractions of the Lough Derg and River Shannon regions.
The impressive Glenstal Abbey was built in the 1830s for the Barrington family. It was designed as a castle in 12th century style. The Barringtons moved to England in the 1920s and, in 1927, sold the castle and lands to the Benedictine Order. It became an abbey in 1957.
The Abbey is not open to visitors but the public can view the 17th century gardens. The church, built in the early 1950s,can also be visited. Despite its traditional facade, the interior is very modern in style, with four stained-glass windows installed in the 1960s.Watch out too for the great gate leading to the Abbey and a massive drum tower that resembles the one at Windsor Castle.
Being close to the Clare Glens gorge and woodland walks of the Slieve Felim area, Murroe is a popular touring and activity centre. The village is one of the focal points of the Slieve Felim Way walk over a distance of approximately 23 miles (36kms). The Clare Glens Cycle and angling on the nearby River Mulcair are other attractive options.
