Mountshannon

A previous winner of Ireland’s prestigious National Tidy Towns Award, Mountshannon is an attractive village near the Clare shoreline of Lough Derg which offers many amenities to visitors.

With the reconstruction of its harbour, the village is now one of the principal stopping places on the lake for hire cruisers, sailing and other boats. You can also catch a boat trip here to the famed monastic island of Inis Cealtra or Holy Island, just 2km (1.25ml) away on Lough Derg – see full details on the island Monastic Holy Island

Mountshannon offers an excellent base for tourists interested in boat fishing on the lake for species such as tench, pike, bream and rudd.

The beautiful Lakeside Watersports Park near the village offers a range of facilities for a wide variety of watersports on the lake, from sailing to fishing. These include motor boats, rowing boats, windsurfing equipment and sailing boats. All these are for hire at daily or weekly rates.

The attractive Park also offers a fine accommodation setting for tourists on the lakeshore, with mobile holiday homes situated in a park full of natural beauty and wilderness. Aside from caravan and camping plus the watersports, amenities include tennis and soccer.

Other accommodation options in or near the village include a hotel, self-catering and bed & breakfasts.

Golf enthusiasts can enjoy the 9-hole Waterpark Golf Course and a pitch and putt course, which are just five minutes drive from the village.

For those interested in heritage, why not take a fascinating stroll around the unique 1.8 hectare (4.5 acre) Aistear Park in the centre of the village, between the main street and the harbour? This Park includes a maze incorporating timber, stone and foliage which takes the visitor through an informative exploration of Irish spirituality over 9,000 years.

Craft lovers can explore the hand-crafted work of Callura Pottery on the main street. Those interested in the arts can look forward to the Iniscealtra Festival of Arts held each year at various locations in and around the beautiful lakeside village – see Festivals & Events
