Cloughjordan
Within easy reach of Lough Derg and the River Shannon, Cloughjordan offers a good base for touring and exploring the area. This is the birthplace of Thomas Mac Donagh, poet and patriot who was one of the signatories of the 1916 Irish Proclamation, and the local library bears his name.
There are two 19th century churches in the village – Catholic and Church of Ireland as well as a Methodist Church. A number of shops and pubs, as well as a post office and sports facilities, are also there.
A mature deciduous wood lies to the north within easy walking distance, and the Slieve Bloom and Silvermines mountains are both about 20 km (12.5ml) away.
