Hi, my name's Dergie and i'm here to help you have a super holiday on Lough Derg, in Ireland's Shannon Region. This section has a listing of all of the wonderful harbours and villages around Lough Derg.
For each village or location you will find information, ideas & recommendations. Keep an eye out for them.
Enjoying a marvellous setting on the River Shannon, Castleconnell in Co. Limerick is a long-established tourist destination with great appeal. Its fame as a holiday base dates back to the 18th and 19th century when the gentry sought it out because of its great fishing and pastoral setting.
The modern-day visitor has much to enjoy and savour in this delightful riverside location. Fishing is still a wonderful experience, with the Castleconnell salmon fisheries being famous in many quarters.
The 7.5km (5ml) stretch of the river at Castleconnell is divided into eight beats, each one with a diversity of special features including rapids, glides, weirs and holding pools. Five beats are let by tender and the remaining three are available on a day-ticket basis. All beats are rotated daily. Permits are available from the ESB, the national Electricity Supply Board which controls them.
Lovers of other watersports activities will also find Castleconnell an attractive destination, with good facilities on the river nearby for canoeing and other pursuits. The village holds an annual regatta that attracts big attendances.
Aside from its salmon fisheries, Castleconnell boasts excellent riverside walks, pleasant shops and craft outlets, such as Orchard Pottery where Richard Ferris produces an ever changing variety of ideas, shapes and patterns. Each pottery piece is made completely by hand. The village also hosts an annual craft fair.
A number of traditional village pubs offer a pleasant setting for relaxation, good food and traditional music. Good accommodation, leisure and dining facilities are available at the well-appointed Castle Oaks Hotel which is housed in a Georgian mansion set in 26 acres of beautiful countryside.
For a special treat, why not take a stroll along to Worrels End Pier, just a short distance from the village centre, where you can relax in peace and watch as the mighty Shannon meanders its way from Lough Derg on towards Limerick.
