Hi, my name's Dergie and i'm here to help you have a super holiday on Lough Derg, in Ireland's Shannon Region. This section has a listing of all of the wonderful harbours and villages around Lough Derg.
For each village or location you will find information, ideas & recommendations. Keep an eye out for them.
This village, located in Co. Clare near Limerick, is famous for being the setting for 'The Shannon Scheme', Ireland's largest river hydroelectric scheme developed in the late 1920s. The scheme harnesses the energy resources of the great Shannon River and, when it was pioneered in 1921, marked one of the great initiatives of the emerging Irish nation.
Today, Ardnacrusha is also a popular holiday base, for those who want to explore the many activity and leisure options on the River Shannon or nearby Lough Derg. It’s also ideally placed for sampling the many attractions and amenities of nearby Limerick City. The system is the gateway to the Limerick Navigation Scheme for boats who wish to travel between Limerick and Killaloe.
The hydroelectric plant makes provision for returning salmon on the river with the fish ladders being on hand so that the fish can swim safely past the station.
Facilities locally include a pitch & putt course (there’s also one at nearby Parteen).
