1. Lough Derg is home to the third oldest yacht club in the world – Lough Derg Yacht Club founded in 1835, which has its base in Dromineer.
2. The ‘Shannon Hydro-Electric Scheme’, completed at Ardnacrusha, Co. Clare between Killaloe and Limerick City in 1929, harnessed the steep waterfalls on the river. It was an important step in establishing the economy of the emerging independent Ireland.
3. The oldest church in continuous use in Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales is St. Cronan’s Church in Tuamgraney, Co. Clare which was built before 964 AD.
4. Two Lough Derg villages have scooped the top award in Ireland’s prestigious National Tidy Towns Competition – Terryglass, Co. Tipperary and Mountshannon, Co. Clare.
5. The Lough Derg area has a famous monastic tradition. Holy Island (or Inish Cealtra) on the lake, was home to St. Caimin among others and boat trips are available to see the many relics there. A monastery was founded by St. Colum in Terryglass, Co. Tipperary 549 AD.
6. A site known as 'The Graves of the Leinstermen' can be seen in North Tipperary, off the road between Portroe and Ballina/Killaloe. This is reputed to be the burial place of a Leinster King and his small army, who were ambushed by Brian Boru’s wife in the 11th Century while on their way to a wedding in Killaloe.
