The great semi-fortified house at Portumna was built before 1618 by Richard Burke (or de Burgo), 4th Earl of Clanrickarde. It was the main seat of the de Burgo family for over 200 years, until it was gutted by fire in 1826. It represents an important example of 17th century fortified house architecture in Ireland.
The ground floor of the castle and grounds are open to the public daily from April to October. It enjoys a scenic location right beside the northern banks of Lough Derg and adjacent to the beautiful Portumna Forest Park.
To the north of the house are formal, geometrically laid out gardens featuring a Willow Maze, incorporating several different varieties of willow.
The Castle now includes the recently restored 17th century walled potager kitchen garden. In line with its original plan, the garden has been wonderfully restored to its original glory. It features organically planted fruit trees, flowers, herbs and vegetables, which combine to make the garden a treat to the senses.
Seasonal exhibitions are held in the Castle and Gate House.
