Hunt Museum, Limerick City

The Hunt Collection is an internationally important collection of some 2,000 original works of art and antiquity. It contains a dazzling assemblage of objects which trace the development of the decorative arts.

The vast collection was donated to the people of Ireland by John and Gertrude Hunt, whose generosity ranks highly in the nation’s history.

The Museum is housed in the elegant 18th century Custom House. The Hunt Collection reflects not only the Celtic past but also includes important pieces such as the Leonardo da Vinci bronze horse, the Mary Queen of Scots cross and a coin revered since the Middle Ages as being one of the original ‘30 pieces of silver’. Another important piece is the personal seal of Charles I of England.

Objects on display are representative of all periods of time, from the Stone Age to the 20th century. Each piece was selected by the Hunts according to the quality of the design, craftsmanship and artistic merit.

Paintings in the collection include works by Renoir, Picasso, Gauguin, O’Conor and Yeats.

Facilities at the museum include regular guided tours, a museum gift shop and Du Cartes restaurant, which overlooks the River Shannon and Limerick marina. Families can enjoy treasure trails and colouring sheets.
