The Cathedral was commissioned by Domhnall Mor O'Brien, King of Munster c.1168. The cathedral is the oldest building still used for its intended purpose.
Without doubt, this is one of the most important medieval buildings in Ireland. It contains many fine antiquities.
The main points of interest include the pre-Reformation limestone altar, the Leper’s Squint, the Reardos of the High Altar (carved by the father of 1916 leader, Padraig Pearse) and the famous Misericords – a collection of 23 carved oak seats which are 450 years old and were used by the clergy during services in mediaeval times.
A visit to St. Mary’s Cathedral is inspirational for anyone interested in Church architecture and antiquities. The Cathedral is still fully in use for daily services.
