‘The Graves of the Leinstermen’, near Portroe, Co. Tipperary
The legendary ‘Graves of the Leinstermen” is a site well worth exploring for visitors to the Lough Derg area.
It’s situated between Portroe and Ballina high in the Arra Mountains. According to legend, the site is the burial place of a Leinster King and his small army who were ambushed by the wife of Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, in the 11th Century while on their way to a wedding in Killaloe
On your visit to this part of North Tipperary, keep a look out for evidence of the area’s great slate quarrying tradition. Magnificent views can be had from these parts, and blanket bog and several varieties of heather add to the allure of the landscape.
