Augustinian Abbey, Lorrha, Co. Tipperary

The Abbey was founded in the 12th century by the Order of Canons regular. Over the following century, the building was twice burnt and rebuilt.

The beautiful doorway was added in the reign of Edward I in 1280 and the carved head over the doorway represents the wife of De Burgo. The archway over the entrance of St Ruadhan's Abbey was formerly the East Window of the Augustinian Abbey and the head over this doorway represents de Burgo himself.

There is some evidence to suggest that the building adjoining the Abbey was once a convent.

Lorrha is easily accessible from Lough Derg and centres such as Terryglass, Portumna, Nenagh and Birr.
